Jo Avila

One of Ynzal’s most loyal customers and long-time friends is photographer and instructor Jo Avila.

His photography classes are always interesting and exciting activities, especially for newbies who have a hard time getting started with the craft of digital photography. Jo goes out of his way to keep the class lively, and each student engaged in and out of the classroom.

His insights in the skill and art of photography are quite legendary (naks!), particularly his focus on the printing aspect. For him, an image is worth nothing if it can’t be printed properly.

Who are you and what do you do?

I am Jo Avila and I am a professional photographer and I also teach photography.

What tools do you use in your work?

I use a 15″ MacBook Pro to post-process all of my work.  I use a Wacom Intuos 3 at home and an Intuos 4 at the studio.  I always have a Wacom Bamboo fun on standby in my laptop bag for location work.  We use Lumichromes (D50 CRI 96) at the work area in our studio to help us better judge color visually when comparing the image on our screen to the print.

What software do these tools run on?

I use Adobe PS CS5, iMovie (to edit the videos that I produce for my students), Keynote (for my lecture presentations) and Pages (for the PDF handouts that I give to my students).

How was Ynzal instrumental in acquiring these tools and software for you?

Ynzal was the only place where I could get everything that I needed at one place at a reasonable price.  The after-sales service and tech support was a plus factor.

Why do you do what you do?

If you teach photographers how to become better at their craft, then everyone else has to raise the bar to level up their skill and vision.

I teach because it’s fulfilling.  I teach because it benefits the community of photographers.  I derive a feeling of satisfaction from the success of my students.
I have a limited skill set.  The only two things that I can do professionally well is to teach and shoot.

What would be your dream set up?

I’d love to swap out the HD of my MBP for a faster HD (WD Black Scorpio) and install also a SSD.  I would want to use either a 21″ Wacom Cintiq or a IPS display with almost 100% Adobe RGB color gamut 😀

Where can we see your work?

You can visit my Facebook page and start from there.
